Mercer Island, WA
Mercer Island, WA
Just over five miles long and two miles wide, Mercer Island consists of high-quality residential areas, naturally preserved parks, and miles of sandy shoreline. Incorporated in 1960, the island is widely recognized as one of the earliest residential communities in the State of Washington. Mercer Island is the most populated island in a lake in the whole country, with a population of just over 24,000.
The city is connected to the mainland on two sides by floating bridges that stretch across Lake Washington– the Lacey V. Murrow Memorial Bridge and the Homer M. Hadley Memorial Bridge. These serve as the primary thoroughfare between the island and its neighboring cities of Seattle and Bellevue. The Mercer Island School District comprises seven different schools on the island: 1 high school, 1 middle school, 4 elementary schools, and 1 alternative secondary school.
Mercer Island Plaza
Mercer Island’s Town Center is the dynamic hub of the city as it is a gathering spot for Islanders. Just a few of the favorite island restaurants include Bennett’s, Mioposto, The Islander, Homegrown Sustainable Sandwich Shop, Freshy’s Seafood Shack, the Roanoke Inn, Pagliacci Pizza, and more.
Luther Burbank Park
This large park has 77 acres of mostly undeveloped meadows and wetlands that still houses a variety of wildlife including 135 species of birds, 50 species of waterfowl, raccoons, beavers, muskrats, tree frogs, and rabbits. There is an off-leash dog area as well as a public boat launch, a fishing pier, a children's play area, a zipline, picnic shelters, tennis courts, and a designated swimming area. The park also has an amphitheater where live music and performances are sometimes hosted.
Mercer Island Farmer’s Market
The Mercer Island Farmers Market has been one of the city’s traditions every year for 12 years now. The event is open every Sunday from June through September. The event offers a great selection of the best fruit and vegetables that the state has to offer, as well as local talented musicians and kid’s activities. Spend your summer here to enjoy the delightful food trucks, artisan vendors, and specialty items.
