Tukwila, WA
Tukwila, Washington
The first people to call Tukwila their home was the Duwamish tribe, which has been in the area for over 10,000 years. The word "Tukwila" is the Chinook word for "hazelnut" which refers to the hazelnut trees that grew in the area at the time. The Duwamish people built their cedar houses along the Black and Duwamish Rivers and survived by hunting, fishing, picking berries, and using the river for trade with their neighbors.
The location of the city is conveniently at the crossroads of rivers, trails, highways and railroads. This position helped determine the city’s inevitable fate as a very important center of commerce in the Pacific Northwest. Early electric rail trains traveled through Tukwila and carried commuters all the way to Renton and Tacoma.
Tukwila has approximately 20,000 people and over 7,000 households and is home to the Tukwila School District. The campuses that the Tukwila School District operates include 2 high schools, 1 middle school, and 3 elementary schools. One of the high schools is the Raisbeck Aviation High School, which is a STEM school that helps students prepare for college and future careers.
